Visions African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) was formally organized in the home of Rev. Dr. Carol W. Echols on February 22, 1994. With Rev. Johnny Edison Jennings, Presiding Elder of the Houston District of the Texas Annual Conference officiating, the Church was organized with authorization from the Presiding Prelate of the Tenth Episcopal District, Bishop John Richard Bryant. The mission of the church was to speak to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and emotional needs of the communities of Missouri City, Stafford, and Houston. Founding members included Gloria D. Carmon, Sheilda R. Clemons and family (daughters Danielle and Donitra), Andrea P. Baldwin, Patricia A. James and family (sons Vernon and Jermel), Rev. Dr. Carol & Rev. Ross Echols, and daughter Rebecca Elizabeth. With a fledgling membership of 25, and a little under $1800 in the bank, the church began providing ministries to support local schools; provided assistance to disadvantaged families; supported the homeless; organized and hosted youth conferences; sponsored a health fair; operated a traveling Christian book ministry; provided incentive grants for scholastic excellence; launched a television teaching ministry on Access Houston; hosted District Conference meetings; and even co-hosted the 133rd Session of the Texas Annual Conference in October 1998. The church had begun having bible study in March 1993, and had its first worship service a year later at the Holiday Inn at 11160 Southwest Freeway, Houston, Texas. All worship services and conferences were held at that location until July 27, 1999. Then on August 1, 1999, the first worship service was held at 802 H Texas Parkway. This 2,180 square foot area accommodated a place of worship, a fellowship hall, classroom space and an office for some 20 years. After this lease termination, worship was held at the chapel of the Heaven on Earth Event Center, posing for one year during the COVID pandemic. The church acquired land in the Briargate Subdivision in Southwest Houston from the Conference Trustees, and it is here that the building process for a Family Life Center has begun. Current ministry endeavors include partnerships with the Fort Bend Habitat of Humanity, Fort Bend County Women’s Shelter, the Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, the Bishop Sarah Francis Davis Foundation, support to Paul Quinn College, the Tenth Future, Inc Annual Golf Tournament, the YPD Souper Bowl Day of Caring initiative, and school supplies giveaway. Additionally, we stand poised to roll out Kathy’s Corner, a children’s reading initiative, with over 1400 children’s books already in house. Past projects include support for the Dorie Miller Memorial in Waco, food delivery with Angel Food Ministries, and CPR Training for adults and youth. Local, state, and global initiatives have been undertaken in league with varying levels of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Individual families have been blessed with holiday meals and gifts. We have supported our college students with book scholarships, supported our Queen Esther, and Little Duchess, supported our WMS Life Member, our WMS Pearl, Lay President, and our members, through life’s celebratory moments and hours of loss. God has truly ordained our steps and calls us to press forward to the divine appointments before us. We are excited about the journey, and with the help of the Lord, we will be faithful to our Kingdom assignment.
